Preparing Your House for a Puppy
Everyone in the house should agree on the house rules for your new puppy before he even arrives. This will ensure that your puppy has no confusion as to what is expected of him. Below are some points to follow to help you provide a safe environment for your new pet: Take your new puppy home at the beginning of a long weekend. The time spent with your puppy will build trust and security in his new home Use puppy gates to block off rooms that are off limits Keep small objects that can be chewed or swallowed out of reach (a dog's mouth is his primary means of exploration) Put away all household cleaners, garden chemicals, and toxins such as anti-freeze Arrange a clean bed in quiet area, but close enough to a family member so that the puppy feels protected and part of the family Provide your puppy with a safety collar and ID tag with your name, phone number and address printed on it Keep electrical cords hidden Dogs can drown, so keep your new pet away from swimming pools and bathtubs just as you would a toddler Don't leave a dog anywhere where he cannot escape the heat and always provide access to fresh water
